The Iron Cross was awarded for bravery in battle as well as other military contributions in a battlefield environment. When the Iron Cross was reauthorized for World War I in 1914, it was possible for individuals who had previously been awarded a 1914 Iron Cross to also be awarded a 1939 Iron Cross. These recipients were recognized with the 1939 clasp (spange), worn on the original 1914 Iron Cross.
